I decided to make another stab at being as good (and svelte) as I used to be. I've been mostly disciplined. But I continue to look around for things to take the place of big cravings or at least sate the same nerve. It's a bit harder now, I think, because there's either a backlash against or malaise about low-carb diets. For a while Trader Joe's would carry low carb pasta and such but no more. Same with a lot of supermarkets.

A year ago I discovered Halloumi cheese when a local yuppie market had a demo table. It's great stuff and I can see lots of uses for it in low-carb recipes but it's also something like $17 a lb. Luckily, a little Googling shows there are some Mexican frying cheese that will probably be available to me more cheaply (Halloumi is from Cyprus).

I tried shirataki again last night and found I hated it just as much as the first couple times I tried it. This really sucks because mac & cheese is a comfort food I'll really miss (I actually don't get into pasta anywhere near as much as bread and potatoes, but mac&cheese is the exception to the rule). I tossed everything I made last night and passed the second package on to a vegetarian friend of mine.

One thing that's good and bad this time around is that I'm not cutting out fruit entirely. I have fruit in my garden I've waited all year to see to a harvest and I don't want to just give it away to other people. I'm also growing tomatoes, chard, beans, snow peas and other veggies so I'm eating a bit more fresh roughage than I was the first time I went low-carb. I think it's just not good for one's health to keep fresh fruit and vegetables out of your diet. But it's true that the fruit intake makes me wonder how much I might be retarding induction.

Something I found while Googling "frying cheese":
Notice what is it the top. I'll give a hint: It's not bread.

Now scroll down to the bottom. See what's at the bottom? I'll give
another hint: It's bread. But it's enriched WHITE bread. ENRICHED white
bread. Where's the whole wheat bread we are told we have to eat to save
our lives? Oh, it's not even on the chart. Because whole wheat bread has
even LESS folate in it than enriched bread.

Yet here's some media drone yammering on about how women are getting

I'm the local low-carb guru and it really does get seriously next to me when people come to me for help and then refuse to help themselves. I've actually had this conversation with someone:

Me: Did you read the book like I asked you to do?
Bonehead: Yes.
Me: Great.
Bonehead: I have a question.
Me: Hit me.
Bonehead: Can I eat grits for breakfast?

I have gotten to the point where I refuse to coach anyone who will not read the book. And I will KNOW if they don't read the book, because they will inevitably ask me something this assinine.

"Oh, yes, I know all about Atkins. Its' where you don't eat ANY carbs for a week/month/whatever!"

GAAAAAH! If one more person whines, "Oh, but you need SOME carbs!" I swear I may do harm to them or myself.

I think what annoys me the most about this breed of people is that they haven't a clue what Atkins, or any low carb lifestyle is about. Not one. They do their screwed up version of the lifestyle, it doesnt' work, or worse makes them sick, then they go out proclaiming to anyone who will listen that it doens't work and that they got sick from it. When in truth, they wouldn't know Atkins if it came up and bit them on the ass.

Meanwhile, all these people who could really benefit from it are scared off of it by bogus information and downright urban myth. That, and I have to listen to unhealthy people telling me I'm ruining my health. It really, really frustrates me.

Couple years ago, the low carb boom in new products and what I thought was awareness really gave me a lot of hope. I now know that this boom was nothing more than the result of legions of people failing to educate themselves regarding their health, and blindly following their own misguided attempts at low carb, with disasterous results. Low carb stores are closing, products are being discontinued, and resistance to the lifestyle is rampant. All because so many people don't even bother to learn about a lifestyle (in this case, "diet" they are trying to follow.

The whole thing really makes me angry.

I have strayed. I admit it. But, at least I have not OVERDONE it with the carbs! Stuck mainly to the lifestyle. Have maintained my weight and am looking forward to maybe another 15-20 pounds to melt off.

How about you?
Many people do not know that this type of low carb diet was marketed in the 60s/70s as "The Drinking Mans Diet".

I do find, however, that less goes much farther while low carbing. And it is easy to go from a bit squiffy to full on DRUNK without starch to soak some of it up.

I never did Atkins per se. I read SugarBusters and then came up with my modification of it. I gather it was close to Atkins in practice, though. I was exercising regularly before I went low sugar/starch. I kept up the exercise but I also went pretty hardcore on eliminating sugar and starch. I weighed 235 lbs. when I started this (I am 6 feet tall). Like many folks, I ate plenty of fats like cream cheese and bacon. But I also ate less in some ways because when you take sugar and starch out of my diet, you take away a lot of what I enjoy about food. So, anyway, I kept exercising exactly as much as I had before. I didn't step on the scale because at the time I made the decision to go low sugar, I was doing it because of a worry of diabetes, possibly PCOS, and also trying to troubleshoot a hormone imbalance I was having. For some reason, I was able to keep with it. I just kept doing it as a lifestyle change.

Within 4 or 5 months I'd lost 55 lbs. I wasn't *quite* as strict as I'd been in the beginning. I occasionally had fruit. I occasionally lapsed a teeny bit at a party. But mostly I was good. I stabilized at 185 lbs. I wanted to lose more. I would have loved to have gotten to one of my college weights (165 lbs.) but I never achieved that. But I kept the weight off for 3 years. I thought it would be for the rest of my life.

In June of 2004, the stress in my life (never low) ratcheted up to very high levels and it's been that way ever since. What started as a day or two of indulgence ended up being a blowing of my dietary regimen. I kept trying to get back on the wagon again...even eating the right way for months at a time but something seemed to have reset in my metabolism. It was harder than before. Within 6 months I think I'd hit 200 lbs. Slowly, slowly, I've gained almost all the weight back again.

I went to Harbin Hot Springs this week and for the first time felt afraid to be nude there. I went clothes shopping today. Not because I like to torture myself but because after 3 years of being slimmer I had gotten rid of my fat clothes. And I need clothes that fit to go on job interviews. I felt awful today looking at myself in the mirror. It's not just the looks thing. It's that my cystic acne has gotten worse due to the hormonal imbalance that comes about from carrying more fat (it seems to mess up the estrogen-progesterone-testosterone balance). My knees and back hurt more from carrying the extra weight.

I need to get back on the wagon again and stay on. It's so damned hard. And from my previous experience trying to do this it seems like my metabolism is even harder to budge than it was before. I haven't been exercising regularly and starting to do that will help, I'm sure. But my god, I wish I'd never fallen off the wagon (exercise and dietary regimen). It's so damned hard being like Sisyphus and rolling that fucking huge boulder up the hill again.

Keep your success stories coming. I need all the encouragement I can get.

I do Pilates Monday/Wednesday/Friday, and I do Tae Kwon Do Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hours.
I love this diet because I really can slouch around with it, and I don't feel like I have to monitor it very much now that I'm out of the first-couple-weeks bit. I really feel like I have a lot of will power now that I didn't have before, and making good choices is much easier that I ever would have thought.
I'm enjoying sleeping well (although this might just be due to the exercise), and also it's nice to be able to think straight during the day, I'm one of those people who gets really whacked out when they eat copious amounts of sugar, so it's nice to finally have a clear mind all straight through the day.
I'm always looking for little ways to make it easier for me to curb my sugar cravings, and one of the most effective of them is tea. Lots and lots of tea. Like, five or six gi-normous cups a day. So, I get my tea, and I put like, three (or four, if feeling especially weak) splendas in it. Then I get me one of those sugar free lemon cookies and have myself a party.
I’m interested in what other odd little tricks people on this diet use to keep themselves for buying the box of Krispy Kremes at Safeway.

People were posting that they would rather be fat than bald.. and such. A couple of people posted some supplements to take to combat this... I ran out and bought all 5 listed. I have been taking them now for a month..and around my face I have a lot of new short hairs.. so I'm assuming I have them everywhere.

So I would love to hear from other who have had this prob.. how they fixed it.. Tho at this point.. according to my math.. it will take 2 years for the new short hairs to get as long as the rest of my hair.. (sad sigh)

If anyone wants to know what supplements were suggested..
Biotin, Inositol, P.A.B.A., a super B complex, and a multi for hair called "maxi hair".

Uh...that's harder to do on a low carb diet. Anyone have suggestions for cozy comfort foods that are alright? I don't have problems thinking of ways to make low carb cold fruit, etc. stuff, but anything baked is an issue. I would rather not use low carb baking mixes because they're hard on the GI tract and full of non-nutritive stuff anyway. If you have something along the lines of nut meal cookies or meringues or something, I'd appreciate any recipes you can point me to.

one year later, i realize the holidays and winter did me in. i find myself doing induction again. i am on my 14th day. it is fine, i even did it while travelling to a family funeral, which was so stressful, i almost cracked at every meal.

but now i find myself in a panic: i am almost afraid to add carbs back. i think i can handle adding fruit, but i know if i add cereal [usually shredded wheat, cheerios or oatmeal] or bread again [i usually eat orowheat whole wheat lite], i won't be able to stop.

i don't remember having this panic before... and i didn't overdo the bread/carbs when i was done. maybe i just need to go 24 days again?

First and foremost, happy and healthy new year to you all. I wish everyone happiness, success, prosperity and good health.

Now...

I posted my success story a few months back and have really just taken a total nose dive. I can't seem to drum up any motivation AT ALL because the depression I get into just makes it worse. It's an ugly cycle.

Here's the storyboard I posted in the tribe album a few months ago:

http://sanfrancisco.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/tribe?page=1&currentoffset=0&parentid=1627aca0-f761-4891-9c69-caa3b443be46&sortby&r=10535

I've gained 12 pounds since I posted this and I'm really starting to freak out. Not only do I need help staying motivated but I need your suggestions.

I totally hate vegetables. There. I said it. I can't stand almost any kind of vegetable and the only ones I'll eat have to come out of a can. So I'm limited in that department. Who else has this issue? Even when I was successful on my program I had to force myself to eat veggies. I can handle broccoli if it's boiled to oblivion. I like canned peas. That's about it. The other stuff I like, I can't eat anyway (corn, boiled carrots).

What do you do about that?

My other issue - I'm a workaholic. A serious work addict. I will go hours and hours without any food at all because I can't stand to tear myself away from my desk. Then, when I do because I'm sooo hungry, I jump all over the major carbs the cafeteria serves up at work. They're daily specials are an Atkins nightmare. It's all about enchiladas, pastas, potatos, rice, etc. So, I'll find myself starved, then go to the cafeteria. I tell myself as I walk across this huge building that I'm going to just get a salad with meat on it. I get there and it's easier to take the special because I don't have to wait for it. Lame I know, but I hope someone here is relating to me.

When I order, I almost always say to myself... well if I'm gonna eat this I might as well order a slice of cheesecake for dessert.

I talked to my trainer at Bally's a little while ago and I'm trying to get myself motivated to get back to the gym. I used to work next to the gym where he'd train me, but now he's 25 miles away. So I'm probably gonna end up getting a new trainer closer to work. In the meantime, I'm planning to just force myself to get my ass to the gym tomorrow. But it is SO hard I feel like a total failure.

If you are like me - hate vegetables, totally addicted to carbs, a mesomorph body type - loves rich foods, high fat, carbs, etc., and on the thicker side - and you have trouble planning meals and taking stuff to work to eat during the day, please give me some words of wisdom.

I am a total "pay for convenience" kind of guy. I totally hate spending a bunch of time at the supermarket, then a bunch of time in the kitchen preparing meals in advance. I don't mind bringing things to work, but I need to grab and go. I love anything pre-cut, pre-cooked, and generally pre-prepared for me to just take it on the run.

If you've slipped off track and gotten yourself together - or even if not and just wanna say something - please chime in.

I have 50 lbs to lose to get to a normal weight again. after losing 170 lbs, this is nothing. So close yet so far. So, anything you can say is greatly appreciated. Post here or email me here or even email me at work. chris.ford@abbott.com

I'm going to check out the Atkins site again today. Also anything else like diet.com or something. I want to find something that keeps me focused; sends me email reminders; sends carrier pigeons or smoke signals I don't care. I just can't sit here and watch myself go back to where I was at.

From noticing my own process losing weight, and talking to others about theirs, I believe the emotional, mental and spiritual components of each individual are inextricibaly linked to the outer physical self.

I'd love to hear from others about inner growth or change that takes place as a motivation to get/stay healthy and lose or maintain a healthy weight for your body type.

I've found that when I consciously try to work on self love and appreciation that eating well and exercising become an expression of that; I just don't want to do things that are damaging to myself...like eating two or three pieces of chocolate cake ;-). As I try and become more sensitive to what I need in other areas of my life I likewise become more sensitive to what my body needs to feel good in terms of diet, exercise, sleep, taking my vitamins and so on.

I used to think saying positive affirmations was stupid New Age crap but before I lost weight my self esteem got so low I was willing to try anything. It was really strange and awkward to say things like "I love myself just the way I am" "My body is beautiful" "I am becoming healthy slim and strong" (to name just a few that related to my weight loss goals) when I often didn't feel that way but it really did help me readjust my thought patterns to come from a place of nurturing and supporting myself (being "on my own side") versus battling against myself and unconscious attitudes that would undermine my efforts to lose weight and be healthy in general.

Does Atkins work for fine tuning your weight? I have tried to go through the induction a couple times since the first of the year and each time the weight comes off fairly quickly but then bounces right back up and then a few when I go back to eating regularly. Health-wise, starting in September, I had one bad sinus infection after another- you know what that means: antibiotics! Lots of them. And prednisone for the swelling of my sinuses and lungs. I also had to rest a LOT- pretty much whenever I wasn't working. So, I am almost totally recovered from last infection (that hit 12/31 and was pretty rough!), and have gone back to induction because now I feel like (ironically) a big potato! This has been almost the worst fall/winter ever!

So, currently, I am procrastinating from going for my walk around the lake- it is about 90 minutes long. I have been trying to go every day for 3 days now. I have never liked exercise and it is a struggle to find something I enjoy doing. Pilates is about it as far as anything I can stick with for longer than a few days. (I think that is because most of it is done lying down!)

I need motivation- everyone I know (who are all thin and petite!) thinks Atkins is crazy, so it is hard to talk about it for support. My hubby supports me, but I know he doesn't agree with it either. However, he has never been fat, so what does he know???

Please give meupdates on your progress so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, at least! I've lost the weight before- I just need to remember what it is like to feel good again! Thank you!!

I have been slowly but surely faithful to atkin's for the last 6 months, but i have done it many times in my life before. it always works though this time i vow to keep it as a lifestyle. At christmas and when i had surgery, i went off for a couple weeks at a time, gaining between 5-10 pounds each time. I started at 170, and am now down to 135 pounds. I have also started working out recently since before the breast reduction, exercise was the last thing on my mind. I just want to say stick with it! I have lost on average about 4-5 pounds a month. That isn't very encouraging when you give up alot of the comfort foods you love. But once that fist person says, "wow, you lost weight," it pays off. Not to mention picking up 35 pounds of a child a going, "wow, i never thought i even had this much to lose." Please, for your own self-esteem and your wardrobe... just stick with it. And when you are 10 pounds from your goal weight, get a Victoria's Secret credit card!! Much love and support to all of you. Keep it up and don't let a little weight gain interrupt your progress!!! Best wishes- Amanda

I'm not experiencing ketosis so far and my metabolism seems to be more stubborn than it was the last time I detoxed. I was using SugarBusters for 3 or so years and fell off the wagon this last June due to stress. I gained back 20 of 55 lbs.

I was considering doing Atkins induction just to get into ketosis but things have been so stressful and I've been experiencing health problems anyway, I didn't want to put so much stress on myself that I would give up. But I also want results so I may have to goose myself up to it.

Can anyone answer why nuts aren't allowed on induction?

Yesterday while shopping for groceries, a guy was giving samples of a tea drink that “blocks half the carbs” of the food you have just eaten. How can they claim that? How does that work? Maybe I’m not up on medical science, but the only way I know of to cut half your carbs is NOT TO EAT THEM. (Sometimes easier said than done.)

Even if these blockers did work, wouldn’t it be too late to do any good? Wouldn’t your body already released insulin into your system. Goodbye ketosis.

Anyways, I would like to hear from people who have tried these products and learn about their results. I just started back on this WOE. Today is day 6 of induction and I can feel the difference!

I'm way off low-glycemic eating at the moment (with the weight gain to show for it) but in a fortnight or so when I finally have my own kitchen again and space to work out - it's boot camp for me.

I ate pretty strictly low-glycemic for nearly 4 years. I've been off the wagon since June. One thing I want to do when I get back on again is eat more vegetables. Not only because it's healthier, but also because I'd like to get my grocery bills to be lower than they are when I'm living on Cantella's chicken sausages.

The best way I found to fool myself into eating veggies was to put them into a crustless quiche. For you other picky eaters out there, how do you prepare veggies to tempt you into eating them?

I started my Atkins lifestyle about 18 months ago and still going. I've made a lot of adjustments along the way, but pretty much keep things as simple as possible.

I've been very successful in changing many aspects of my life thanks to Atkins. I uploaded a storyboard type of flyer that I used for a job application for a sales position at a gym. I figured by way of introduction, it would be a nice thing to share with everyone here. I'm still on a weight-loss plan with about 40 lbs to go (down 169 so far). I have no idea if I'll end up losing another 40 or maybe 15 or 20. Just depends on body fat and where I'm at in terms of muscle mass in the end.

I've been trying for a week or so, and I've had one morning with a clear reaction from the ketostick. Now I'm back to "trace" at best. At first I was dropping weight but now, even though I'm not still eating many carbs (I think I'm below 20, but who knows), I'm stuck.

But having re-read the Atkins induction guide (on the website), I don't understand how people do this and still eat the same amount. 5 oz's of cheese is a few big bites. 3 loose cups of greens is a mid-sized salad. To eat my usual intake of food, I'd have to eat about 6 eggs, three pork-chops, a few chicken breasts and maybe a stick or two of butter during the rest of the day. If I did that, I'd lose weight just by vomiting regularly.

So really, all griping and whining aside, can you give me an idea of a full day's eats during induction? Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks?

I'm a chef and constantly around very anti-low-carb people all the time (0ther chefs and cooks I work with as well as foodie friends.) I don't think any of them would even consider I wouldn't be on Atkins (though it is the only way that works for me! Low-fat and tons of excerisce just made me tired and hungry for years!), so it can make it really hard to stay on track when hanging out with them and eating. Usually, I will say I am not that hungry or my tummy is unsettled for some reason. I don't feel like I need to explain what I eat to people (I think it's personal and find it rude when people comment on what other people eat!), however, not eating bread with my cheese, refusing dessert and booze, and so on can be pretty conspicuous or hardly eating anything at work, when we all break and eat together. Do you tell people and deal with all their (often uninformed) opinion and judgement? Do you feel a personally responsibility to educate them? Does it even make a difference? (I don't think it does. People seem as passionately against it as for it!)
Here are some things people have said around me:

1. Atkins is for a sedentary lifestyle (not true- the more active you are, the sooner you drop pounds! It is very slow to work for me if I am not working out regularly.)

2. Eating only meat and cheese isn't heathly. (even though you aren't supposed to eat only meat and cheese! I eat a huge salad every day.)

3. The second you go off the diet you gain it back. (true, but if you do it correctly, you will never really "go off" the diet, just change it gradually)

4. Ketosis is a process of your body consuming itself because of lack of sugar for energy. (ew! I think I would know if my body consumed my kidney or something!)

Week 2 my energy went away for the most part but I'm still testing positive on the strips for ketosis, I think I've hit a plateu already, I'm going to do induction for another week to try and get another 5 lbs off. Could my lack of energy be due to the fact that I'm not eating the full 20g's of carbs? I try to spread my carbs over the entire day, but I usually end up in the 15-17g's of carbs a day. I've even cut my carbs to 12g a day when I thought maybe something I was eating had hidden carbs, but that didn't help either. Any Ideas?
