So I've been taking Rainbow Light vitamins. They are a little pricey but I feel like I'm buying a good product. Just curious what vitamins others are taking, if any. Thanks.

Re: Vitamins?
Thu, March 1, 2007 - 10:56 PMI generally buy my stuff at Trader Joe's. Vitamins and supplements are damned expensive. Esp. given that you can deduct OTC cold medicine as a medical expense but cannot deduct vitamins and sups, even if they're prescribed by a physician.
I take a multivitamin, CoQ10, Vitamin E (right now I'm trying to get a surgery scar to heal well), acidophilus. I take chromium picolinate whenever I think I've gone over my limit blood sugar-wise.
As far as brands, I use Source Naturals for some things and Now for others. -

Re: Vitamins?
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 5:27 AMI don't take 'em.
I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. I just never stick to taking them, even if I start. I'm not convinced they help, so it's easy for me to not do it.
Given the nutrient dense food we eat, I personally think we can probably get away with not taking them. I realize that's not what Atkins advocates in his book, but that is just me. His contention is that we are coming off such a poor diet (traditional high carb, sugar rich western diet) we need them at first, and that is probably correct. but I have been doing this for over 5 years, and with the exception of my pregnancy, I have never stuck to any vitamin regimen. -

Re: Vitamins?
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 6:26 AMOh, I fluctuate in my vitamin intake too. I don't judge either way. About 20 years ago I worked for Great Earth Vitamins and learned a lot about what crap vitamins like Centrum were. Most cheap brands have tons of non-active fillers, including some of the same ingredients used in car wax.
Yum!
I grow an big organic garden every year. But in the winter I really do shy away from a lot of commercial fresh foods and like to supplement during those times. After reading "Diet for a New America", I feel I learned a lot about just how low in real nutrients even our "nutrient rich" foods actually have. There are advocates either way, of course..(organic vs. non-organic). But having been raised on an organic farm I may be a little biased. But unless I grow it myself, I really can't afford organics in the store. For me, I am hopeful to see the organics revolution in the grocery stores. Even Sam's Club is carrying organics. I can get a big tub of fresh organic baby greens from Newman's Own for under $4. : )

Re: Vitamins?
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 9:20 AMI take a whole handful of them, when I remember to, which seems to be every 1.5-2 days. :)
I take a standard women's one-a-day multi-vitamin, a B-Complex(boosts energy and regulates mood, esp in women), and a Lysine (boosts immune system, wards off cold sores) each daily. As for my low-carb specific stuff, these are the spendy ones. I take CoQ10 (1 30mg daily), Omega-3 (100mg or so), and up to 4 500mg L-Carnitine, which, when taken along with a protein-rich meal and the other two, boosts the body's ability to convert fat into energy. I read about this combo in Fran McCullough's Living Low Carb (which is excellent for those doing low-carb long-term). This combo also helps to keep the momentum going if you have a not-so-strict day. -

Re: Vitamins?
Tue, August 14, 2007 - 3:36 PMLikewise, I take a good woman's one-a-day from Rainbow Grocery (can't remember the name), lysine, CoQ10. Also, flax seed oil with evening primrose oil (for my omega-3s), Jarrow-dopholis & occassionally echinacea if I'm feeling run down or like I'm getting a cold. And St. John's Wort to keep me in a happy place :-) .
